What is the finest compost regarding texture?

For various reasons I'd like to buy a bag of compost with a fine texture, not the usual course stuff with larger bits and pieces and which clumps very easily.

Any recommendations please?

 

I've got some of this and its really fine, but I assume it can vary, most compost seems to.

I find that the peat free composts are quite lumpy and bumpy so I have been known to sieve it for seedlings and small plants. In fact, I often mix my own these days - some MPC, some home compost and perlite/grit if required and manure if available for some of the veg in pots.

 

Fertile Fibre has a wonderfully even texture, perfectly sieved. Unfortunately it’s not cheap but it is peat free. The seed sowing formulation came top in Gardening Which? tests.

 

I'd have a look at the Melcourt Sylvagrow range; again not cheap.
