Now, there is a question that I never thought I would ask on a public forum! :snorky:

This has been the first year that we have had more than one plum grow on the tree (last year was the tree's first year), but so far we haven't had one that we can eat. A good few of them shrivelled up before they ripened, and ended up with a sort of sticky yellow fungus on them (like little yellowish dots), so I removed them and lobbed them. The two that we have picked that looked ripe both had wee maggot/caterpillar things inside them.

Any ideas as to what could be wrong?

That looks exactly like the little blighters - so, I will need to use a pesticide next year. Thanks Nigel :)

Just ordered a pesticide (Provado Fruit and Veg) which will hopefully enable us to finally get edible plums from our tree this year!

We've planted a Victoria Plum this year. A good size tree about five ft high with three nice branches and the leader cut out .

Looks like some sort of aphid to me, but I am no expert - the Provado might be just the thing for your tree too though?

                      Hi Joolz,

Looks like whitefly to me. I usually spray them with washing up liquid diluted in water.

The black could be traffic grime - I've seen it on the likes of our camelias, as we get tons of crud in the air here (not a million miles from the motorway, and Heathrow's finest also a regular sight)

@fat controller - It's awful sinking your teeth into some nice juicy plumbs to discover a maggot in your mouth!!

Look on the bright side - plums with added protein.

Joking aside, can completely empathise with you. Those pesky maggot-like catapillars from plum moths were are a nightmare one year at a previous house. It's so disappointing when you pick off a plum and straight away you know what's lurking inside as the sap-like bump on the skin gives it away... so straight in the bin :wallbanging:

Traps or sprays... anything to stop the blighters. They are seriously annoying and devastating for crops.

Maybe i need to prune it,think i may neem oil spray it as well after its flowered,no idea it will help :)
A mobile plant doctor would be very handy some days :heehee:
