Well here I am again, I'm still working on the Barn garden but have been thinking lately about what to do with our Lavoir area. It's the place where the people of the hamlet used to come to do their washing in the times before washing machines. It's fed by a natural spring/source that's flowing all year round,The water flowing from the lavoir to the stream in the wooded area below it. This part of our land is lovely and calm and great when it's hot. It could become a very special little grotto. I'd love some sort of seating here and to create a pond from the lavoir. The area is reached via a wide grassed path from our barn (house to be) of about 22ft x 60ft.This slopes down to the Lavoir. The ground is quite uneven and partially over bedrock, So not easy to even out. The area including the lavoir is roughly 38ft x 26ft. The lavoir bowl measures about 10ft x12ft. The area behind and to the left is raised and goes up to our orchard and our neighbours land. The main problems are that The "bowl" and the channels for the water are in a bad state and as such it leaks from all over the place makeing the surrounding areas boggy. There are also some trees that need removing. There are lots of downed trees that have surcomed to past stormy weather, that need clearing. No mean feat as some of the trunks are about 4 ft across! It would be nice to have some attractive planting though at present I'm not sure what. It is shady for a lot of the time. Any ideas?
