HI, could anyone give me some ideas of what to plant near a leylandi hedge? Its about 120ft surrounding the whole garden and about 10 ft high by 8 ft deep. It was about 22 ft high but had it trimmed last week and now would love to start planting shrubs or flowers around edge. Thanx, Doug. (total beginner).

    Hi Dougy,

You'll be lucky, the only things that do anything near them in my experience are bulbs, and they need to be watered and fed every year because the leyllandii takes everything.

Sorry to say, but the 40' Leylandii hedge that was here when we moved in a couple of years ago is now a 5' Beech hedge :thumb:

I have ferns growing under the neighbours Leylandii hedge (on our side!) and they're currently exploding with new growth. As I can't get rid of this hedge and it runs down one side of the garden I've taken to finding plants that will do ok there. Its already damp and boggy in some places on that side, but gets dappled sunlight coming through the bottom of the hedge - where the leylandii are already getting leggy!
