Armandii - that's great to know that they last for many years. Do they increase? For me, quite a few bulbs such as Anemone blanda, nemerosa and coronaria just fade away, but Allium sphaerocephalon multiplies like crazy.

Hi Pete, well, the Fritillaria under the Liliac was bought back in the early 90's as a single plant from a Wednesday Market at Market Drayton. I can remember sticking it in the back of the Jeep and driving back home with my Wife and I looking at each other both thinking what is that smell???:heehee: That single plant is now at least four plants so they don't multiply that fast. I took the Head Gardener's advice at Kiftsgate and planted it more than 24" deep and it has survived well, and has flowered every year. My Anemone blanda do well under the light shade of my Acer Brilliantissimum and in the free draining sanding soil. I've not tried nemerosa or coronaria but I might do just to see how they do.

That's a heck of a depth. At that level the bulb will never get frosted, so in the right soil it should be perfectly hardy. But I am on cold wet clay, and I suspect that they would rot from the wet. I bought my bulbs last autumn, and the seller said they would be unlikely to survive a winter here. I think the soil type also has a big effect on whether other bulbs thrive or die.

When I put them in the greenhouse, I could detect that small everytime I opened the door. Distinctive but not unpleasant.

It is, but the Head Gardener was insistent on it!!! Most of the area around here is sandy soil, and my House is built on 300'-400' of sand and I have an old Roman Sand Quarry only 50 yards from the front of my House, so digging into the soil has never been a problem.:snork: I think you're right about them rotting in clay unless you did some extensive digging and drainage improvement. You're doing the right thing keeping them in the way you do.:snork:

Three of the cats, Teddy, Phantom and Twitches, do come in side, and are handleable for the vet visits and can cut their nails etc. Panther and Sissy don't like coming inside, however, I can pick them up for a limited time, have them stationary for a limited time to put the flea drops and wormers on them as needed. Mom-cat- I can only pet when she is eating, and flea drop her when eating, she however likes to sneak inside on occassion.
Unkie, is the most skiddish, keeps his distance, IF he is "really" focused on eating I can gently sneak up and flea drop him, and sometime pet him. So that is my family.
