What's looking good in September 2011

I also have a few Clematis that have just started looking good; they were all bought from Home Bargains earlier in the year as young single stem plants for £1.29 each, they're now thriving :thumb:

This gorgeous yellow dahlia is looking at its best now, especially against its almost black leaves...

 

Simbad - I don't know Sphaeralcea 'Incana' - clearly a mallow - its lovely. I presume it is hardy with you. I have just Googled CGF, who (ie Bob Brown) said it survived -22C with him.

Bilbo - I love those dark leaved Dahlias. I sowed a packet of "Bishop's children" last year. It very clearly illustrated the fact that Dahlias don't come true from seed, because every one was different. But in the mix were some lovely dark leaved ones with a range of colours.

 

I bought the seed a few years ago Peter, yes its a mallow, it said on the packet it was a hardy annual, but yes its survived in the garden ever since, even last winter, did have another too 'Las Brisas' a mix of pinks and whites it didn't survive last winter unfortunately,but did the year before which was nearly as cold, didn't collect seed either so must send for some more, something a bit different that flowers till the first frosts, they're quite tall too 4-5ft.

 

Osteospermum Margarita Sunset was a couple of quid in the local charity plant sale - it was a bit sorry for itself when I got it home but its bulked out really well !

This Hibiscus was given to me as a 2" plant, grown from seed, by a gardening friend about 3 years ago. It's now about 2' tall and is opening up its first flowers.
It's in a sunny border along with other white plants because i thought it was going to be a white flower !!!!!

 

Out in the garden first thing this morning, a lovely crisp, clear morning with the dew sparkling on the grass and the low sun creating some lovely effects.
Particularly liked the way the sun was lighting up these Honesty seed heads and shining through the cobwebs nearby.

I love how the best results are often by accident. This monster grew by itself without any help from me. It appeared as a seedling growing near the edge of the vegetable patch, it wasn't really getting in the way so I let it be. It's now 8ft. and still going strong!



It's listing a bit after last weeks strong winds but still seems to be firmly rooted. I'm tempted to stake it, will need some help with that!



The late evening sun lighting up my Acer Drumondii



This Fuchsia hasn't really done much all summer, but it's putting on a great late show. Given to me a couple of years ago, can't remember the name. Any ideas?

 

Don't know the name of that fuchsia, Trunky, but it looks identical to one I have which I grew from a cutting. Mine gets going late in the season, too. It's great the way it's just getting into its stride when other things are finishing.

 

Yes I have that fushcia too but I can't remember the name either.
