Fine drizzle( now 2 loads of laundry have been done!),but is now gradually clearing and the sun is desperately trying to appear. 'They' predict a fine ,sunny day eventually! High of 21C.

Currently sun peeking through but not sure how long it will remain dry. Mild and breezy too.

Well, today is a public holiday here in Belgium. All offices and shops closed, and restaurants etc on Sunday setting....
...so of course, it’s raining! They say it’s 17c out there, but feels colder in the wind. Time to pack away the bikinis for another year!

                Hi,

Black hole; puddles; rain and breeze; a bit of sleet and snow would make a change.

                Kind regards, Colin.

You’re not allowed to hang out your washing @Sian in Belgium ?!! Is that not just front gardens?!

Heck. It’s a “good drying day” here, as my gt granny would say.

You are not allowed to use power tools (eg lawn mowers, hedge cutters) on a Sunday or other “feast days” or public holidays. It makes for lovely peaceful Sundays! In many districts, you are also not allowed to put washing on the line - it frightens the poultry, apparently...? To be fair, I’m not sure it is the case in this district, but the locals tend not to use washing lines generally, so it is hard to say...

I bet that is lovely and peaceful. I adore Belgium. I would move there tomorrow if I could. Do I recall you are not far from Brussels? I’ve never actually been there-just around Ypres/Flanders etc and Bruges.

                              Hi,

We used to have Sunday closing when the church ruled here in the UK but the church has lost its grip of its flock because many like me broke free. I use my power tools and machinery any day of the week including Sunday but I never ever use them in unsocial hours; Sunday morning if I'm in the workshop early I busy myself not making noise until around 10 o'clock; if I run my big machinery I always close the workshop doors. Common sense rules in my workshop and I never try to make enemies by my activities.

                              upload_2019-8-15_12-17-18.png

I was brought up and taught Church of England until I reached 15 years old and started work down a deep coal mine changing my life forever. I'm not in the least religious now.

Possibly in future years Belgium too will move forward and those who want to; be allowed their freedom to work on Sunday if they so wish. Sunday is a day of rest so why are churches open on a Sunday. No offence meant or inferred but I believe we are all meant to be free people.

                              Kind regards, Colin.

Yes, I’m south, the nearest town that people will have heard of is Waterloo... things got all very exciting here 4 years ago!

It really is. We noticed it most when we lived in the centre of Brussels - on a Sunday there was such a feeling of calm!

Belgium is already a very secular country, @Retired. However, they value community, and peace. So on Sundays Belgians visit family, and spend time together. Very few consider themselves at all religious or attend church (in fact, many are very anti-religion, which you can understand considering the sex-abuse scandals under the name of the Church here), but that doesn’t mean that they don’t need to recharge their batteries.

Regardless of religion, I think we function better if we have some “down time”. It’s just that here, it’s called “Sunday”.
