No, there is a fundamental error in the article. It is not going into red giant mode. It is going into Green giant mode. The makers of Green Giant sweetcorn are upset that since the early 1980s when they had the monopoly on sales of sweetcorn in the UK, many other sweetcorn suppliers have come to the market, chipping away at their market share.

In an attempt to remedy this problem, they have come up with an ingenious but extremely ambitious plan.

You see, to us here on earth the sun may appear to be orange or yellow, but in fact it is closer to white, but our atmosphere reflects and diffuses some parts of the spectrum, making it seem to be primarily at the longer wavelength end of visible light, ie reds and yellows.

Green Giant sweetcorn makers have sent up a serious of rockets, each carrying a massive role acetate sheeting, not dissimilar to that used on overhead projectors from the 1980s and 90s, and indeed this is where they got their idea from.

On the 1st of December 2012 the rockets will reach their destination, about half way between earth and the sun. Phase 2 will then begin.

Phase 2 involves robotic appliances unrolling the large rolls of acetate film, and connecting them together in a huge mosaic. The effect will be to create the worlds largest ever light filter, using the sun to project a huge image of the Green Giant onto earth, in what will become the world's largest advertisement. Phase 2 will take several days to complete, and it is expected that the first projection will reach earth on 23rd Decemeber 2012, just in time to remind people to race out to the shops with the intention of including Green Giant sweetcorn in this year's christmas dinner. They are also looking into ways to include Santa Claus's famous 'Ho Ho Ho' chant into their huge marketing scheme.

What was the old joke? What do you have one huge green ball in one hand and one in the other?

Total control over the Jolly Green Giant.

I can see matey boys concerns, but if this was coming from the galactic centre, every star between us and there would have gone Red Giant if he's right.
