i want a cherry tree in the garden - has to be black fruited, self-fertile and as sweet as honey. these are the varieties i have come up with sofar: sweetheart / sunburst / merchant / kordia --- i dont have space for more than one tree.
QUESTION: does anyone know which one is the sweetest variety?

Must admit I'm not well up on cherry varieties, they grow a lot around here and are avilible from july to mid august most years from local orchards.
So, I'd never bother growing one myself , bearing in mind bird problems and splitting in wet seasons.
I was under the impression that it was mostly the morello cherry that was considered sour.:smile:
Just for a bit more input, a local nursery that is good.

Most cherries need a pollinator so best check that before you plant only one.

Suggest you contact a reliable grower who can advise you on size of trees, time of fruit, flavour and pollination.

On the Deacons website they show 6 dessert (sweet) ones and claim all are self-fertile.

I have not bought cherry trees from them, but they were excellent for apple trees. They say Lapins is resistant to splitting.
