There's no doubt that the method works but the question is would a Gardener who has a love of roses, with possibly some being of special meaning to them, use a hedge trimmer on them? I find pruning Roses is satisfying, takes away any stress, and is in a strange way therapeutic. With secateurs I'm able to choose an outward facing bud, the height of the stems, and control and even forecast the shape of the rose. So while the butchering method does work I would think it's better for mass rose hedging.:coffee:

Good evening my friends I have been a long standing member of the Royal National Rose Society' most of my life this is what they suggest as to pruning as of to day:) I have sent an email to the Secretary and and will phone the society tomorrow as I haven't any knowledge of the society changing their pruning methods,I to would like this matter cleared up as it could be very confusing and misleading,I will report back when I have more inforemation:dbgrtmb::)

When should I prune my roses?
Bush roses benefit from a tidy up in the autumn to prevent wind rock. Main pruning and training takes place around March-April after the winter frosts. A clean sloping cut is essential to avoid disease and the collection of water.

I don't think that they have changed their pruning methods, Woo, I believe it was just a trial to see how efficient and viable using a Hedge Trimmer. But like I said earlier it's not a new thing as several organisations tried the method at least a couple of year ago.:snork:

If its speed you are after the method below will only take seconds :snork: I'll stick with my secataurs cleaned in methylated spirits.

Good evening Armandll my friend no I understand that what worrying to me is that any young or new rose grower might think that the Royal National Rose Society might be saying this is OK and its the way to go and that seems a very unlikely scenario:)

Hi Woo, I agree with you about it being a very unlikely scenario, as the RNRS is too well established to recommend a fad method to any new rose grower.:snork:

Well, it looks like I've stirred things up a bit with the quote! For us home gardeners roses are not cheap to buy whether bare root or potted and when we've paid out good money I think it's right to look after them properly. My new rose bed is on display to the neighbours and I don't want them seeing a mangled mess, I want to display something to be proud of and something they will find pleasing to the eye. :)
