Have always fancied an acer in the garden, and so now have gone and got one. Will it be ok in one of these half barrels you see ? Any particular compost, or will multi purpose be ok? It's going in the shelter of the walled garden where I work, but I wanted it in a container in case I should be moving on one day! [IMG]

I have two Acers in containers and they are fine, but obviously depends on how big your plant is.

I have planted mine in erecacious compost as I am told they do not like lime. I was then told that some Aces could tolerate lime, so 10 years ago I bought a mop head Acer and put it in my well limey border.

A week ago we took the decision to dig it up and burn it - a total failure, so I would certainly advise going for acid compost.

they hate wind, so you sound to have picked a good spot for it.

Most deffinately ericaceous potting compost, and fine in half barrel.

I've dealt with several happy acers in barrels!! I took off the top inch of compost every year and replaced it, and many customers liked to have bulbs planted under them - looked good!
