    I too thought it meant drinking straws and was confused. Straw, as a mulch, works well with a lot of crops and keeps weeds down as well.

      Talking of straws :heehee:

      Mrs Shiney enjoys knitting whilst travelling. When we had a flight to go on they wouldn't let her carry knitting needles on the plane (she might be a terrorist :hate-shocked:) so she grabbed a couple of straws and went on knitting. :dbgrtmb: She doesn't let anything stop her from doing what she wants to! :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

            I use ex-stable straw laid over (wetted) newspaper mulch to form temporary paths across large veg growing areas, as a mulch between row of spuds.

            I've used it as in the pic above for mulching around squashes where I strimmed an overgrown area, dug some small pits, filled then with compost, planted squashes through polythene mulch mats, then mulched out everything in between with newspaper covered with ex-stable straw, getting a good crop, rapidly both getting a large area under cultivation and tidying it up.

              when enclosing a delicate cutting in rooting compost inside a plastic bag/mini greenhouse - fastened with an elastic band :phew: insert a straw up the side and blow gently to inflate;
              and then - remove straw
              simples
