Bought some bare root Astilbe Red Baron which arrived today. Thought I'd pot them up before planting outside when spring arrives. Trouble is I can't work out which way up, what do you think?

Second photo has a flat bit where it must have been chopped off from the mother plant, so I suppose that is the bottom?

Any knobbly bits I would assume is the top,
Photo 1, I would guess the right hand side is the bottom.
Photo 2, I would guess the right hand side again is the bottom.
Maybe sit them as they are on some soil and see where they start sprouting.

Only 4 days after putting in a poly bag with damp compost and they have started shooting already.

So now it's obvious that my cuttings are vertical slices off a main root, I thought the flat sides were the top/bottom
