Has anyone bought compost yet this year? I've been told by a friend that the brand at local independent garden centre is very dry and twiggy. Jacks Magic is £9 a bag! I'm wondering if anyone has experience of B & Q or Wickes own this year please?

The more I see of this thread the more I tend to think its pointless, mainly because composts from the same supplier seems to vary wildly from batch to batch and place to place.

We also all seem to be looking for something different in a compost.

I bought some a couple of weeks ago but pretty sure it was last year's stock. Some peat free variety, RRP £13 but got it for £4 from Squires

I still have two bags left but expect to buy more of the same. At a local nursery it is now 18.50 for three 60 litre bags of Godwins MPC with peat. It has been good in the past and I hope it continues the same.

I'm tempted to stock up on peat before it's all removed from sale. I honestly can't remember the current plan to remove it from sale but expect it's soon

I think peat is banned from 2024.

Peat vs Non Peat is still a very constoversial subject, but Clover are still selling their retail peat products, if you can find a local supplier. One of ours does 3 x 60 ltr MP bags for £20

I think all retailers will sell it for as long as possible and good on them! There's still nothing comparable to peat and not selling it to domestic gardeners is going to make not a jot of difference

The media have misinformed the public that the peat ban will come into force by 2024. It will be from January 2025 and will only be enforced in England and Wales, to date, Scotland & N'Ireland have yet to announce their plans of phasing out peat. So even though the press has been publishing peat will be banned by 2024, no bill has yet passed parliament.

Seems as though it may be worth popping up to Scotland for a lorry load. It may depend on the wording of the Bill. Some reports say it will be "banned for sale from retail outlets". If that is the case then it could be bought in bulk from Scotland, if they don't ban it, by a group of ardent amateurs. If it is worded as banned for use by amateurs but not professionals I can see quite a few interesting legal arguments on the matter. :heehee:

Going to Scotland to buy peat based compost for personal use without any resale, then it will be 100% legit. Even if it's worded in the bill as being illegal, how would they enforce it?

Border Patrol :roflol:. We could run a big van up there financed by all the members of a gardening club. It would all be for personal use.

Or just have a pallet shipped through the pallet delivery network, would be cheaper than renting and fuelling a van. I will not be able to sell to any sector in Scotland from 2025, yet anyone in England using peat based compost for personal use will be able to purchase it from Scotland, mad
