It is, Clueless, although there can be a certain amount of open transmission if operations are linked to a Civilian Authority. I'm afraid the Helicopter interception story doesn't hold any credibility with me. While I was at Midland Radar we had many civilian aircraft flying low all over the place, some with flight plans and a lot with not.
Most modern aircraft that fly regularly above 2,000ft are fitted with IFF anyway for identification anyway. You don't have to fly at the recognised speed to break the sound barrier, due to air pressure conditions the aircraft can cause a sonic boom at a lower speed or. in some cases, a higher speed is required.:snork:

The plot thickens. Around lunch time today I was out on my break and I saw two jet planes flying at low altitude. Not fast, just ambling along.

There's nothing at all unusual about this, we're not far from an airport and we often get small/medium sized jet planes flying over.

What was unusual, and I thought it at the time, is that the two identical planes were flying very close to each other, like I've seen fighters in formation before. However I didn't recognise them as any of the fighters I've seen flying about on training exercises, so I thought 'civvy aircraft in military style formation, how odd'.

Then following this thread, I did some googling about today's incident. Didn't find much but I found footage of two typhoons taking off on a different occasion. They were the same shape as the planes I saw earlier.

Could it therefore be that the planes were up my way, and for whatever reason the RAF wanted them moved somewhere else?

I honestly wouldn't like to hazard a guess, Sheal, as the story has got distorted by different parties with different agendas, as happens very quickly to all such things.

With regard to the Olympics you can bet your boots that there will a 24/7 air coverage with different types of aircraft including the Bombardier Electronic Surveillance aircraft to monitor all communication traffic.

Can anyone tell me what the small group of bipeds with large heads and glowing eyes were doing walking across the field at the back of us a couple of hours ago?

Reminds me of a conversation I overheard, as a whipper-snapper, that my Mum was having with a young airman in the local RAF mess, she was making conversation something along the lines of:

"What have you been doing today?"

              "I've been down in Bristol"

"Oh, poor you, that must have been a long day"

              "Yes, about 8 minutes ..."

They had E.E. Lightnings back then, mid '60's probably, might have been a bit earlier, they used to wake me up at 2am when they were scrambled to go and have a chat with the Ruskies somewhere over the North Sea, but I do remember being impressed that they took off two-a-breast when we went to Battle of Britain day and they were off for a jaunt down the Mall ...

Always think that the recorded bit for a truck reversing should be in the style of a Dalek.

                    "Warning! This vehicle is REVERSING"

Again, Marley, what good would two QRA fighters be doing answering a emergency call when we have suitable aircraft in the RAF on standby 24/7 for just that. Typhoon Fighters are for Air Defence not answering emergency calls. It just doesn't tally......and I'm not a conspiracy fan. The trouble is that MOD will hand pat answers to the local authorities so they can say something to the National, local Press and all the other enquiries they get so the Police, who haven't got a clue as to what went on, just act like as a spokesman taking the heat off the MOD. :snork:
