brick planter suggestions

    hi i have an 12foot by 2foot planter with trellis back that i built to seperate the patio from the garden.
    i am looking for advice on climbers and plants to go in the planter , im after colour but hopefully not to much pruning .
    ive been told no pansies/voila lol as the to tiny
    any help would be great , it get sun in the morning and is shaded from 1pm onwards

    Hi, the obvious climbers would be Clematis; if you pick a group 3 variety you would only have to cut them back to a few inches every spring and then they would grow away and flower late summer. The Viticella group are worth considering, there are some lovely ones out there.

      hi mate im a bit thick with the pruning side of things when you say few inches do you mean from the roots or old growth .
      will google the viticellas to investigate cheers j

      Hi Woody, I always wait until the new buds start swelling in early spring and prune everything off; leaving just 2 pairs of healthy buds on each stem which may mean leaving just 6-10" of plant left above ground level (some recommend cutting back further, but I'm a bit cautious I guess :D). It sounds brutal but they are vigorous growers and soon re-grow through the spring and summer and then produce masses of flowers.
