Don't expect a young plant that is planted out this year to get through a harsh winter. My understanding is that they need growing on for a season or two before you can assume them to be hardy.

I like the look of C.viminalis (the Weeping Bottlebrush)...................

Cor! I like that Longk, I don't think it would survive in my sandy soil and coastal position.

I lost my Viminalis last winter to a -7c although -5 would cause severe damage.
Al, don't go for C. Cirtinus Splendens, although it has large spectacular brushes it is not fully hardy. I bought and planted one last July several of the growing tips burnt after a couple of frosts late November. The more common red Callistemon Linearis/Subaltaus/Rigidus (three different names) is hardy upto around -9c or so so are the pale yellow Pallidus and Salignus. There are quite a few newer cultivars now, I planted C. Inferno last year in the Spring but have yet to see how hardy it is.

:heehee: :heehee: ... wish it were mine, Strongy. It's at our 'local' ... mine is working on getting there having had hundreds of brushes this year with months and months of blooming. It's companions are ...

a large Brachychiton acerfolia (think you can just see the C viminalis in the background ...

PS The white shrub in the first photo to the left of the Callistemon is an Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, white with red throat!

No doubt you will post some pics when it is in full flower:blue thumb: .
The Bauhinia is stunning, I have only grown Purpurea which flowered and set seed at only 4ft high sadly I lost it and the young ones last year.
You must have had the the Brachychiton some time now or has it grown very fast.

:hate-shocked: Oh, that's not my Brachychiton, mine is only 50cms tall with half a dozen leaves ... I've had it years but seems to have shrunk each year rather than grown so now have planted it in the ground at the river! I think the one I sent Pete years ago is twice the size of mine!

The Brachy, Bauhinia, and humongous C viminalis (plus large H rosa-sinensis) are all at the entrance to our 'local' about 5 minutes drive from us on a private country estate (each plot either 2,500 sq mtrs but most 5,000 sq mtrs), hence the bank of post boxes.

I have a Bauhinia galpini which I did from seed from Chiltern Seeds about six years ago ... it must have taken six months to germinate, grew a few centimeters, died, came back the next year, repeat performance but this year shot off and is about 50cms tall and spreading so am hoping I will have flowers this year.

I know how you feel Armandii as I have just bought myself (more accurately I used my crimbo tokens) a Clianthus puniceus that's in bud which I now have to wet nurse through to the spring.

Excellent find, Big A. Can't see by the package but I guess it's a C citrinus, which is the one that looks upwards and has sharp leaves. I much prefer the C viminalis because it is so soft to handle and weeps.

My Sis just bought one this past month in Florida like yours for I think just under $10 but it is 1 meter tall already.

Lovely, lovely shrubs and go well as I have said above with the Melaleuca.
