Hope you have enough room for all them Canna plants from seed Joolz . I have grown from seed the last 2 years . I start them late January , all the scarification instructions are in this post early on . They do get quite big before you can get them outside . I have only grown 3 or 4 from seed each year . 2013 I am growing from my saved Tropicana rhizomes and the Hart Canna Bengal Tigers.

If you have the space I would order them sooner, so that you can be starting them off in January, or early Feb. They need a long growing season, from seed, if they are to flower in their first season.

Americans not as big on Xmas as they would have been on Thanksgiving, a month ago, in my experience. Not sure their website was much used? as I think they favoured facebook for comms. But I haven't had much contact with them - JWK, and others, bought some last year I think?

Alice (Karchesky's) use Facebook a lot, I have liked their page on there and they're still putting up regular updates on there; as recent as yesterday. Lots of photos of Brugs at the mo that are flowering in their overwintering polytunnels.

I have quite often messaged Alice through FB to ask about Cannas etc and she always replies within 24 hours...:dbgrtmb:

        Hiya Kristen.

I have some Canna seed that I bought from 'Plant World' (Brasiliensis). I note that you say to sow January or early Feb. You reckon that sowing any later is best avoided?

No problem sowing them later, its just that it might then be a bit of a race to get them to flower in the first year.

But if you can't give the seedlings enough light and heat then better to delay until weather provides both those for you - for free!

I would like them to flower first year, but obviously I want to keep the heating costs down as much as possible. Once germinated, what would you say I could get away with, with regards to minimum temperature?

I think they'll be happy on a windowsill with good light ... all depends what else might be competing for that space :)

Light is more the issue, early in the year, than heat as I'm sure you know :) so a lighting rig is probably better than a heated greenhouse.

Canna germinate pretty quickly, so you after you soak for a couple of days, and then sow, you only have a week or two before they need some reasonable light.

How many days since you started yours off Joolz? I reckon you told me about them 10 or maybe 14 days ago?
