clematis armandii- how fast to grow?

    morning lovelies,
    i bought a clematis armandii around a month back, planted it with its roots deep in shade and its good to go. question is, i want it to grow over an arch which is 8 ft in height, so how fast does this grow when it gets going? is it quite rampant? any need to cut back after flowering or should i just let it do its thang?

    I bought one from the Range about a month back (bargain for a fiver too :blue thumb: ).

    Mine already has some growth on it so I'll be interested to read the replies to your query.

      Mine grew very slowly . Although the bed I had it in is cursed for clematis , they all seem to struggle in it. No problems with all my other ones. Dug it up two weeks ago..................

        Hi al, I've got a few of the Clematis Armandii varieties. Since you've planted it deeply it should be okay, but since it's past it's flowering it'll now concentrate on growing. It's quite an aggressive evergreen and once it's settled should put on several feet in a year quite easily spreading in all directions if it's happy. I have an Armandii in an Acer Brilliantissimum that I planted last year. It has now spread to the top of the tree and along all it's branches. You won't need to prune it if you want it to cover distance and height.:coffee::snork:

            Mine has been in 4 years now and still hasn't established, it's grown 6ft but the winters cut it back. It's in a windy cold position which I think it doesn't like.

                I have 2.
                First one was planted about 3 years ago.
                Took a year or two to get going, but last summer, and this summer, it has really put on a lot of growth.

                The 2nd was was planted last summer, and has yet to really get going.
