Concrete slabs as weed control?

    I use a fair amount of membrane in my very large garden as have no desire to spend my whole life weeding:). I use approx 1 ft square bits of old carpet with a hole in the middle for growing Cauliflower and Broccoli /Calebrese which solve the weed problem. As JWK says potatoes form a canopy and most emerging weeds get sorted when earthing up. Something like a roll of chicken wire or sheep netting should keep the chickens at bay. You can fix the netting into place with bamboo canes or these are quite good.

    They can be stood on to get through hard ground and don’t rot.
    Certainly your idea would perhaps look better but I agree with noisette I could see slugs and snails enjoying living under the slabs.
