This is one of what I think is a classic song. The person who put the video together that goes with it emphasises a lot of the music and history that the song alludes to.

A lot of people think, wrongly, that the name of the plane was the title of the song.

@Nikolaos That's a nice version of the song.

It is thought to date back to the 1600's (in various versions) but Paul Simon learnt his version, and adapted it, when he was over here in the mid-sixties. In the 40's/50's Ewan MacColl recorded it (a bit more dirge-like than Simon and Garfunkle's version) and the song is thought to originate in Scotland and been transferred to Scarborough.

Ewan wrote many famous folk songs, songs and ballads including this:-

His daughter, Kirsty also wrote and sang many songs but was killed in a terrible accident.

This was one of her hits

And she recorded a lot of songs with The Pogues, including this old song, but this version was recorded on The Jools Holland Show without them

              An interesting aside is this:
Paul Simon learned the song in 1965 while visiting British folk singer Martin Carthy in London. Art Garfunkel adapted the arrangement, integrating elements of another song Simon had written called "Canticle," which in turn was adapted from yet another Simon song, "The Side of a Hill."

The pair added some anti-war lyrics that reflected the times; the song was on the soundtrack of the movie "The Graduate" (1967) and became a huge hit for the pair after the soundtrack album was released in January 1968. The soundtrack also included the Simon & Garfunkel hits "Mrs.Robinson" and "The Sound of Silence."

Simon & Garfunkel gave Carthy no credit on their recording for the arrangement of a traditional folk song, and Carthy accused Simon of stealing his work. Many years later, Simon settled the issue with Carthy, and in 2000 they performed together in London.

This is why I love YouTube, stumbled across this group a couple of days ago. Can't even remember how and I sort of like that... Some of their stuff really reminds me of traditional Bulgarian and Greek music.
