I got stung by a wasp last Monday , just by my wedding ring . Not really painful , but fortunately I took my ring off . Within 10 minutes my lower finger had swelled by 50 % and an hour or so later the left side of my hand was swollen . Took over 5 days for the swelling to go down.

The swelling can be terrible Harry so I know what you mean...my staffy got stung in the mouth on the one side so I used vinegar to dab is mouth but it took 2 days to go down...then he captured another oh my god my dog look deformed so I got the bottle of vinegar opened his mouth and splashed it at his mouth by tea time he was back to normal...after choking and drinking loads of water ;)

        Yep, me included.

Wasps do have a benefit, they eat aphids.
So basically they are one of the good insects that you really dont want to kill unless you have to.

Some years ago, me and the dog disturbed a wasp nest in the ground without realising.

We both ended up pretty sore, but survived.

If it happens again, @HarryS, dive for the vinegar bottle and soak the stung area really thoroughly until the pain subsides. If necessary, a wad of kitchen roll soaked in vinegar and topped up a couple of times does the trick. I know what you mean about the swelling. Most of the stings I've had were when pruning or weeding and I ended up with a hand like a football. If you apply enough vinegar quickly enough, it doesn't even itch the next day :)

What a load of rubbish. I have 2 wasp nests on one of my allotments. I have actually been feeding them for the last few weeks. Yesterday I left a mint sweet out for them, this morning about a half of it was gone. Might I say, when I arrived on site this morning a wasp was all over it.

An even faster way ti stop the sting is to put a drop of mustard, the condiment, on a sting. I was told about this years ago and had the occasion to try it and it does work almost instantly.

You are correct about the candy part. And also since they use artificial flavoursmost of the time to make candies and then add loads of sugar, it is not comparable to the actual plant. I have never heard of mint being a wasp repellant but it is commonly known to be a rat repellant. Yes, mint is a bully but if in pots, it is a good start to natural solutions. :)
