Does anyone know what the problem is and is it likely to spread to other trees?

    thanks

^^^ Could well be, lots of conifers are accidentally cut back too harsh in places after a long growing period then they scorch. Makes me weep when I see them. Also looks very much like a once beautiful/large/long run of conifer I look after which was scorched by fire not long ago. The clients set fire to about 12 cubic metres of thatch I'd removed from their not inconsiderable lawns. They chose to site the fire within 6 feet of the conifers :( I'll take a photo if I remember when I'm next there.
