Been out over the Christmas period doing my annual prune of trees and shrubs but went a bit further this year as things were getting a bit overgrown.
So I had a pretty big mountain of stuff to burn from the garden and the allotment, some was over 5 ins in dia, ok not big, but not allowed to put it in the garden bin.

Just wondering if I'm the only anti social one on here, as bonfires do seem to get the neighbours tutting.
I should add that once it was going there was very little smoke, and it's a nice way to keep warm on a frosty day.

I use an incinerator from time to time.
I do let the neighbours know in advance that I'll be using it so they stand a chance of closing their windows and I tend to use it at dusk so as not to interfere with any washing on the lines.
Never had a complaint yet :fingers crossed:

If I was going to let the neighbours know in advance I'd need to get about 50 leaflets printed up.:snorky:

The only bonfires here are on April 30th. For a couple of weeks before this date, the local farmers collect prunings etc from the all of the villagers, and put them in a single pile to burn as we party around it.

We bag up any thick branches after Mr Kandy has finished his pruning and take them over to our allotments to be burnt when we have lost of weeds to get rid of. It is a pity Pete that you can't do that although I don't know if you have got an allotment or not?

What grieves me is that a small livery along the road has now started to burn their horse much pile to try and get rid of it so there is always the smell of it burning when we drive past on our way to our morning walk.No one seems interested anymore in collecting the manure for their gardens or allotments and it is a site we see over the fields of farmers burning their muck heaps:sad:

We have never had a bonfire in our garden as our garden is quiet small but years ago we had a spate of a horrible smell wafting over the gardens.I think some bright spark had the idea of getting rid of their kids disposable nappies by burning them out in the back garden probably in one of those metal incinerators and no isnt wasn't our next door neighbours as they have only been in their house sixteen months.:snorky:

This is typical of the bonfire we have about six times a year.

                  P1210787.JPG

We also have the occasional bonfire if we have had to cut a tree down, as we did this year (last year ). It was a 60ft poplar. Some of the logs were taken by neighbours for their woodburners and the rest were burned. 'Nice' neighbour also takes the opportunity to put anything on my bonfires that he has that needs burning. He just chucks it over the fence and then comes round and picks it up and puts it on the fire.

All fires are done in the evenings and when the wind is blowing in the right direction. No bonfires on Sundays. In the old days the law said bonfires could not be started before 6 p.m. and never on a Sunday. That law was scrapped decades ago. Nowadays there are no laws governing bonfires apart from not causing a nuisance. It's down to the local authority to decide what constitutes a nuisance but they can issue an 'abatement order' and a fine of up to £5,000. In a built up area the authority can consider almost anything a nuisance but a brazier of burning tree or shrub debris is unlikely to come within this as it will not produce sufficient smoke nuisance to warrant it.

In areas like ours there's no problem as long as it doesn't become dangerous or the smoke spreads across the road.

Well, there I was on the allotment (@Kandy ), a couple of years ago when I lit a bonfire, the wind was in the opposite direction, I checked before hand.

When her, "who always has washing on the line", rain or shine even in fog and drizzle, came out in a frenzy and started giving me a mouthful about not lighting a bonfire until after 6.

Now that was in Feb, and I cant see what I'm doing on the allotment in the dark, so I leave it as late as I can. But at that time of the year its dark at 6pm.

                    Never spoken to her since.
                    Cant say I'm bothered.;)

Attitudes have changed. It always used to be 'not before 6 p.m.' but not anymore and they now say that you shouldn't light a bonfire after dark as it might alert the fire brigade. :dunno:

Also you can't legislate against termagants. :snorky:

@pete we have the same problem with people over at our allotments who's houses back on to the allotment fields and they do nothing but moan on the village Facebook page.Often I start my bonfire with the wind in one direction, for it to suddenly change direction and am then in a panic that the smoke will blow towards the houses:sad:

We even have allotment holders who have the stinkiest bonfires and the smoke often blows over on to other plots especially when we/they are trying to work on them and we all end up coughing and choking but we never complain:sad:

they had a rule on my allotment site that bonfires could only be used between the end of sept till the end of mar. but the people in the houses had them all year round.
The worst were those that go out there on the hottest day of the year, everyone with windows open, and burn plastic or polystyrene.
But does Miss big mouth, washing always on the line, say anything to them?
No way, because she knows those ones are likely give her some verbal back, or worse.
