Thank you @Golarne for the suggestions of Geranium. It's a plant I really love. Last year I went to 3 local nurseries looking for Geraniums and found next to nothing, there always used to be so many to choose from and I wasn't sure why there just weren't many around.

Cimifuga I think is a bit big, but I do like it. I think it's quite poisonous too? I've avoided it in the past but I like it's growth habit. Campanula I think it's a great idea @noisette47 . I will look. Thank you. The whites may be nice. Salvia sadly haven't survived the soil in the past and they would have looked great. Ajuga didn't survive either.

So today I ordered some seed; purple Aubretia, white Antirrhinum and Lythrum Rosy Gem. I wish I'd looked for campanula as well! But I can have a look in a garden centre some time. Id also planted some Monarda at the back end of last year that I keep forgetting about. So I'll see if that comes back. I'm wondering if leaning slightly towards the 'weedier' plants that are a bit tougher might be an idea. Verbena hastata is planted in the front garden in a border that gets full sun, the year before last when it was newly planted it put on such a show. Last year not so much, but then we had so much rain ️ and so little sun ☀️ a lot of plants in the back just drowned in the soil last year which in places was standing water for months on end
