I'm too high for that, neighbour got told by a gardener you wont get edible fruit from trees above 300m. She has a pear and apple and never got any fruit off them in 20 years :(

If she only has a single apple tree and a single pear tree her problem may be that there are no compatible apple and pear trees close by with which to cross pollinate with. If you got yourself an apple tree you may suddenly find your neighbors starts producing fruit after 20 years.

I would love some cherries, but would need to find out for sure if these would fruit up here before I spent the money on them.. I'm not sure who to ask, nobody here has fruit of any kind apart from black and red currants.

Ok, I've just Googled ' Growing fruit trees up in the high Scottish Hills' and plenty of info comes up.
Can't post a link as some are on other forums but they did say that cherries in particular do need other trees for pollination.

Have a Google....they is lots of info out there:dbgrtmb:

The problem with cherries is that the birds can strip the tree bare in a few hours.

Your conditions may not be ideal but the more i think about it your neighbor probably has a cross pollination issue if as you say no one else is growing fruit trees. Ironically your neighbor is advising you not to grow apples and ensuring that you don't plant a tree that may we'll cross pollinate theirs.
