No it was a bonkers idea. .....a garden on a bridge over the river costing millions? Much better to create some truly wildlife friendly habitat in central London.

You would like the London Wildlife Trust's new nature reserve in Hackney @Redwing , which opened earlier this year: Woodberry Wetlands - Home: A nature & wildlife reserve in heart of East London. I visited the other week and was very impressed - it's been beautifully done. On the site of some old water reservoirs, paid for via the regeneration of the neighbouring housing estates. That has been the usual pattern over the last thirty years or so in London for any major projects to improve the natural environment, they are initiated and funded as a quid pro quo for property development - e.g. the similar WWT reserve in Barnes WWT London - London Wetland Centre and the many new sections of the Thames Path.

I actually thought the garden bridge was a rather beautiful and romantic idea - just not a sensible or practical one. It's a relief Sadiq Khan pulled the plug on it, only a pity so much money (and time and temper!) got expended on it first.

Wow! I used to play there as a kid just after the war. :old:

Also got caught by the police for breaking the speed limit along there, on the downhill bit from the reservoir, on Lordship Road! I was on my homemade two wheel scooter :snorky:

I read about this. Didn't David Attenborough open it.....and I'm pretty sure it didn't cost £32 million!

Whilst it sounded like a brilliant idea (akin to The High Line in New York but on a bridge!) all of the consultancy and prep work and research that was spent on it was a bit silly - I was also not a fan of the fact that it wouldn't have been open to the public all the time, as it would have in effect been a private park, that the owners could rent out to whoever they want!

Completely loved the ideas, but unfortunately a lot of money that could have been put to better use was wasted on thinking about it, with no actual work done!

I also wonder how much of a coincidence it was that the former mayor was very friendly with the design studio who got the contract to make it...who also somehow "won" the contract to build the new routemaster buses, which aren't as good as they should be!

I thought the garden bridge was a great idea . World class cities like London should have fantastic structures like this . I can't grasp how much has been spent on the concept and how much it will cost to close it down £40,000,000 :hate-shocked:
When you mention "the war" ,can you please be more specific which one , then we can narrow down the historical period

I'm trying to remember which incarnation that was , but I think it was after the Great Fire and The Plague. :blue thumb:

Shiney, what was it like when England was a republic. Were you a friend of Mr Cromwell and his son ? :)

Not quite a friend (verily not!) but it was a pity about three of his sons who died young. Henry was a vicious tyrant in Ireland and Richard didn't last long as his successor. So the monarchy was reinstated. :dbgrtmb:

I wasn't happy during the republic.
