    Hi,

A friend has been offered a year old Halls greenhouse but its frame is a powder coated dark green, which they do not like, prefering a plain silver /aluminium colour.

However because its in such good condition/price they were asking us if it can readily be repainted silver or white ?

Sadly could not help as no experience of repainting powder coatings and assume removing the powder coating to reveal the aluminium is a hopeless diy task.

Can anyone advise if its realistic to brush or spray can the power coating and what type/brand of paint should be used for a durable finish ?

For the price of a few spray cans it's worth a try. I've sprayed all sorts of materials over the years and the only one that didn't work was a blue plastic barrel. Assuming your friend is going to spray the framework before he re-assembles the glazing? Imagine the quantity of masking tape (and patience) required otherwise :heehee:

With the powder coating having a smooth finish they will need to prep the surface so the paint will bind. Probably going to have to sand it down a touch first, then add a primer before the finishing coat.

There seems to be a paint for most surfaces these days, not sure what kind would be suitable for powder coating, possibly one that is suitable for plastic?:dunno:
Is the powder coating in good condition?

If not, and some aluminum is showing, it could cause problems meaning two different surfaces.

All paints will adhere to polyester and epoxy powder coated surfaces provided there are no slip agents on their surfaces (added to paint and powder formulation to increase mar resistance).

Thanks all, it does not sound the easiest of jobs.

She desribes it as pristine condition, though even a keen diyer myself would be rather apprehensive about such a big job with so many detailed profiles, not sure its a job we would tackle let alone her.

Perhaps after a bit of thought she might look for something else.

As she said new ones are still on such long lead times, though when trying to look on Halls web site to see exactly what model she had seen, came across this confusion.

The first one we saw as this site - Who Are We - Buy Halls Greenhouses For Sale & Home Delivery

The second one - Halls offers | Hallsgreenhouses.com

Seems the second one is a group called Juliana ? looks like they have taken over Halls, but not sure why the first one is also trying to appear to be Halls, trading also as GardenSite. ?
            Very confusing ?

            I'm just not that picky.
A year old green powder coated one would do me.
Green really doesn't sound that bad.

In theory but that 123 paint dries really fast!
I'd just put up with it being green :)

I have here some old oiled teak and aluminium chairs - the aluminium was originally powder-coated white. When it began to go I rubbed them down and repainted using a bog standard oil primer over any bare bits, and then a bog standard gloss finish paint. The first time I used white but found that yellowed badly, so after that went over to a very pale grey - attractive in its own right and much longer-lasting

Agreed - and I *am* picky about colours. In her shoes I'd secure the greenhouse, if it is such a good bargain, and put it up, and see how it looks - if she is open-minded she may at that point decide the green helps what is after all quite a utilitarian-looking structure fit into her garden. White/ aluminium is traditional, but can also look quite obtrusive.
