Finally splashed out on a tricoflex hose yesterday, I still have the cart reel from my old hose and can’t help but feel the winding tight on the reel was the demise of my last hose which was only a year old and was a good quality one too . I’m thinking of buying a simple hose hanger and would like to here your opinion on which one seems to do less damage to the hose from experience.

Hi @Matt-tropical I had a hose reel but actually found it difficult as the hose would twist without my realising and then stayed like that till next use and the twisted bits never recovered so now I have a bracket on the wall out of the sun which I wind around loosely and have now been using same pipe for four years.!
I have a Stratford like this pic and I have 2 hose lengths joined on it no problem.. Always put in shed for winter

I don't like hose reels. I find them heavy to manoevre and hard to reel back in. My previous hose was a collapsible one. I couldn't afford the XHose so I bought a cheaper equivalent. It didn' last long. I was desperate for a hose so I bought one on a reel. It' very strong and more than long enough. It should last a while. My neighbour has a pipe that coils up.

Have mine on a reel and never had any issues with reeling it in. I got an anti-kink one and although I'm careful about being kinky (cough) it reels in easily and doesn't get all knotty. Just watch out for twists and sort those out when reeling in and all should be fine. My reel comes out in late springs and packed away in shed for winter.

I can never understand the problem with hose reels . I have the Hozelock one below. It's important to fit the hose guide roller as shown on the right to help feed the hose on . Also turning the water tap off and de-pressuring the hose helps . I have a 30metre hose on my reel about 8 years old without problems. It's outside all year. :blue thumb:

The X-Hose got awful reviews, it's basically a plastic bag inside a spring , and is not very durable.

I use two car wheels bolted to the wall, one above the other them reel the hose a round that, but make sure their in the shade if outside

And don't forget the hub cap as that will hide the bolts :snorky:

I use the Hozelock reel as well. Not the wall mounted type, but the wheeled one. Its near as makes no difference 30 years old now, and has always had 2 x 25metre (or is it 30 metre?) lengths on it. Other than the connectors cracking and leaking now and again, no problems with either the reel or the hoses.

I always depressurise AFTER reeling in as it seems to coil more easily

Thats the way I do it as well. It seems to stop the hose getting a bit squashed.

Bit of a bodge job perhaps, but has worked for me for about 30yrs, existing hose is probably only 10 yrs old.
I just take off what I need, never been a fan of reels of any kind, my biggest hate is those stupid electrical extension leads on a reel.
They never reel in properly, or out for that matter.

Thanks for all the replies everyone I’ve kept the cart reel but think I’m going for a hanger type to see how it goes. Seemed like a stupid question when I posted, my frustration was based on this being my 4th hose in 5 years admittedly the first two were cheap none branded but the last one wasn’t cheap with the cart type reel. I’ve always packed them away in the winter too. One thing I did notice from the pics you shared was that the wall mounted reels seem to have a bigger drum meaning the hose isn’t wound so small in the centre.
