I have a couple of heated propogators which I use in the early spring - like you say they are very useful to start seeds off in colder weather. Also they have a plastic cover which keeps in moisture, raising humidity which encourages germination.

This time of year I don't use the propogators, seeds seem to start OK in pots or seed trays. The only thing I sometimes use is a polycarbonate sheet over the seed tray to help keep in the moisture, until the seeds germinate. I just have to be careful because if the sun shines on them at this time of year it will bake them very quickly. So all my seed trays etc are in the shade until the seedlings get big enough to stand the sun.

I have had chives in a large pot in my garden for 5years and they were all supermarket pots planted up, as a matter of fact they don`t seem so good this year so i was going to buy a couple of pots and start again

well it was 2 1/2 weeks ago when i sowed my chive seeds are there is nothing yet :(
The spinach are still coming through ok though. Ive also sown some lavender and dill seeds, as well as sage and parsley (only a few days ago).

Maybe i should do what you did pamsdish and just buy supermarket ones. I did that with my mint which ive had for over a year now and it still looks fab!! (although it did very almost die 'cos i didn't water it for ages! poor thing)

Ive watered the seed tray again where the chives have been shown, although the compost was moist anyway, i thought it was worth a try as i haven't watered it since the seeds were sown 2 1/2 weeks ago. I starting to think i just haven't got the hang of it?

Don't give up busybee, keep on trying. I'm having some problems this year as well, for some reason I just could not get my parsnip to germinate, I'm on my third batch and a few have now appeared (probably way too late for planting). Also my pumpkin refuse to do anything, so I sowed all my remaining seeds and a few have come through, again its very late for them. Whilst things like lettuce & spinach have romped away given the same treatment. I've never ever managed to get basil to grow from seed successfully, but my neighbour manages it every year and I rely on him for a few plants.

"I just could not get my parsnip to germinate"

I've read that a lot this year, and had the same problem (although I think I bought mine in the Summer Seed Sale last year, so probably "stale" anyway).

I had better success chitting on kitchen paper and then carefully transplanting immediately they chitted into newspaper pots with an inch of reused seed sowing compost on top of normal multi-compost. But it took me the whole of April and May to get a full "batch" of plants :(
