I have the stump of a weigela that I must have chopped down 15 years ago but it has resolutely sprouted every year ever since. I have tolerated this but it really is in the way now. I have chopped off all extraneous growth down to almost soil level but I would ideally like to get it out. Will I have to dig it out (painful) or is there some chemical I can put on it to make it rot down?

Tree stump killer should do it :blue thumb: I've used it successfully on a couple of things I didn't want growing back. I think I used Deep Root.

Paint it on the top of the stump, then cover with a bucket or some weighted down thick plastic for a week so that a) rain doesn't dilute it and b) cats/dogs/kids don't have access.

You can hire a tool called a tree stump grinder I think.

Thanks, I think I'll try chemicals first, then the grinder. (Sounds like hard work!)

I wouldn't do it myself personally. I know of their existence while chatting the last lot of landscapers we had in. Tree surgeons in your area probably do it I'm sure.

I've used something similar, I drilled a few holes in the stump so the chemical could really soak in. It stopped new shoots appearing but it still takes a few years for the root to rot away.
