I hate the modern trend with having artificial lawns, they are totally ersatz to me.

Thank you for responding, Michael Hewett. That's interesting to hear - I tend to think of it as a 'new' problem but it clearly isn't.

I had one across the road last year where I work newly bought house drive wasnt wide enough so up comes the lovely herbaceous border to make way. I wasn't there early enough but I did pull out lots of astrantia out of the skip, I've still got them and will be dividing them now and giving them out to those that will appreciate them.

A row of very tall pine trees was removed from the garden backing on to mine many years ago and it still grates that my view has changed (it felt like we had a little forest view at the bottom of the garden) and the home for wildlife has gone.

Hopefully some green will return to that garden in time and meanwhile you and your neighbours will adopt any wildlife that would have had homes there.

Thank you for your kind words, AuntyRach. You're right, of course and all the wildlife will be very welcome in my garden. How upsetting to lose your beautiful view of the trees. I don't think I would get over that, either, so no wonder it still grates.
