I have seeds for Mesembryanthemum crystallinum to try this year.

I usually do hanging pots for a friend and wondered if anyone here has grown them. If they work well on hanging pots and any tips you can offer to help me get some success.

    Many thanks.

    I've never grown this @CanadianLori .
I looked it up and it does appear to spread, my only concern would be the flowering length of time, I have grown other mesembryanthemums and I've found unless you are really dead heading every couple of days they stop flowering.

Aha. Thank you @pete . He won't be deadheading anything or any of that type of maintenance. Just watering . I guess I'll be getting some wave petunia seeds then.

I was going to do some for myself in window box style containers for along the rails on my deck and I'll stick with that plan as I would be just fine with dead heading.

Well then you will be able to make a judgement for next year, but I think most species types that come from hot dry climates tend to just rush to make seed and then call it a day if you let them, its just a matter of survival for them.

The Petunias sound great for the job, but I've never grown that particular series either, we can buy plug plants of petunias that are sterile so no seed produced, they just flower.

Yes, I'm arguing with myself. The seeds are expensive and of course there is shipping. It might be simpler to just buy the plants come spring and stuff them in his pots. lazy Lori... lazy Lori

I have used aptemia, which is rather similar, in hanging baskets. They look very good, bush out well and dangle nicely over the edges. I have noticed though, that the ones in the baskets at the front, north side of the house dont flower very well, while the ones at the south have more flowers. I mainly grow them for the pretty foliage. Sorry I don’t have a picture.

I have grown Aptenia, very small flowers for me, but if you like the foliage then you get a lot of that.

I notice there is a variegated variety.
