I think it was me that suggested the 100mm clanless was actually 30mm too big.

As you hadn't yet made the other one, couldn't you have made that one to fit the gap? :heehee:

Hello! Just read this thread and now I am curious. I only use feet and inches for measuring height. I've always been taught metric since being at school. How come feet and inches is more accurate? I'm genuinely curious to know as when I've been doing the 3D plans for our plannign applications (I use a program called Sketchup) I often find I am a few mm's out and it's really annoying. I was also told it's 2.5cm to an inch - which is actually incorrect as I found out the hard way, so has caused me problems when converting measurements in the past.

It isn't - it's just this lot being awkward....;)

Any how - we're still in the EU - so we should be using the metric system

Metric is actually easier, just as long as you stick to it and only use mm and Metres, the confusion often creeps in when people start using cm.

Conversion is not straight forward between imperial and metric, as usual if you need to be precise then you need to do the proper calculation. https://www.google.com/search?q=inc...9i57j6j0l6.10852j0j8&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

But for most of us 25mm = one inch, but obviously the longer the distance the greater you will be out if you apply that thinking.

An engineer was talking to a joiner. The engineer said proudly " we have to work to plus or minus one thousandth of an inch". Not bad said the chippy but we have to do it right !

Nope, we are out, and have been since 1st of February. Bring on the non- metric units! :heehee:

Having grown up deep in the metric pool, I find it very confusing to juggle the Imperial Units. Miles and pounds are fine after 12 years in this country, but trying to explain how big the baby was or how large your back garden is is a bit of a struggle. Thankfully the monetary bit got sorted out, I remember my first visit to London in the 80s and the challenging maths.

My favourite Imperial unit is "slug"

The slug, a unit associated with imperial and US customary systems, is a mass that accelerates by 1 ft/s2 when a force of one pound (lbf) is exerted on it.[37]
                        F = ma (Newton's second law)
                        1 lbf = 1 slug × 1 ft/s2 (as defined above)
                        1 lbf = 1 lb × g/gc (by definition of the pound force[citation needed])
                        g ≈ 32.17404856 ft/s2 gc ≈ 32.17404856 lbm.ft/lbf.s2
                        ∴ 1 slug ≈

For all those fans of obsolete units try these examples and see what's easiest

                          1) Calculate cost of 2m x 1.25m @ £2/m2

                          2) Calculate cost of 4' 11/5" x 6' 63/4" @ £1 13s 6d/square yard (you were allowed to round up/down to nearest inch, after calculating the precise dimensions).

And do it with a pen and paper, no calculators required, that's what it was like many years ago and good riddance to it (was even worse when there was halfpennies).

Dont ever remember using a fifth of an inch, it was quarters, eighths, sixteenths and thirty seconds etc.
