A year ago I began a project to make a Mediterranean style garden within a courtyard garden. Here are some pictures a year on taken today.

And this is what it looked like in April last year. You can see a lot of drainage work was involved as well as filling the area with soil, sharp sand and manure.

And this is it planted up in May last year.

Thats looking good indeed. No risk of soggy wintertime roots there. Land drainage is something i should really be getting done too.
Is that a bit of elephant/garlic in there too?

No elephant garlic (whatever that is) but lots of various alliums, most with flower heads now. Soooo exciting.

The centrepiece tree is a cherry; I would have really preferred an almond but this is Sussex, not Greece or Italy, and I want it to do well. Other plants are cistus, helianthemum, lots of alliums, lavender, nepatha, verbena bonariensis, teurcrium fruticans, myrtle, scabius, various thymes, grape hyacinth, poppies, cyclamens, thrift, anemone blanda, ipheion, dianthus, cranesbill geraniums, euphorbias, sedums, rosemarys and a few others I can't remember. The sandstone lumps have been reclaimed from some building works as has the brick edging. It's a work in progress and will evolve as I find out what works and what doesn't and also what survives in southern England and what doesn't. Most of my previous gardening experience is and has been on Sussex clay so having a well drained piece of garden to work with is a new departure and a treat......it's very exciting for me.
