I recently moved into a bungalow with a small north facing garden(about 30ft by 30ft ). Ideally I would like to make it into a cottage garden, we are high on a hillside overlooking open countryside and it can get very windy, I am fairly new to gardening so any tips/suggestions would be very welcome

    [IMG] Hi Brian,
Sounds like you will having plenty to keep you busy, but before we go any further, is this a new garden or one that is already established, that you want to change  You also say you are high on the hill. So how steep is the garden, raised beds may be a way to go. What ever you can certainly acheive your cottage garden I'm sure.
There are plenty of people here who will help too I'm sure. [IMG]

Like Marley a little more information would be useful. In addition while the north facing is not necassarily a problem with a cottage style garden, the wind could be, and providing some shelter for taller plants could detract from your views. But as the prevailing wind in the UK is from the southwest (not always though) - its dooable - and the slope as Marley says can be addressed with either raised beds or terracing What does the garden look like now - and what kind of soil?

Shelter from northerly winds will probably be the first thing to look at - and whether you want open views or views between planting.

Ideal time to plan the garden, as you have the rest of the summer/autumn and winter to get it planned the way you want it. Lots of people here who can give you plant advise and more with a little more information
