New Garden Shed Build

As I need to keep the overall height down to 2.5m, I've gone with treated 4x3 timbers for the base frame, 4x2's for the joists. The floor will soon get covered in 22mm OSB which will make the floor nice and solid before making the walls also out of 4x2.

I've been in discussions with some building professionals who make garden rooms like this for a living. It's probably overkill for what will become my workshop / shed, however it's proving to be a great learning experience. I just need a few clear days to get the next steps done……

 

I started by asking a jobbing builder who turned up on spec, if he could build a shed for a few tools, and maybe a nice place to sit and look at the view.
He consulted me about every stage, often over a beer, and at every stage it grew more elaborate, more satisfying, (and more expensive) until I was presented with the "Best Room in the House" and my favourite place to be.
So to get to the point, which the careful observer will know I rarely do, I would recommend that you view the project as a "Space Ship" which will transport you to wherever you most want to be.
I find a big window, an old transistor radio, a hammock and (in Yorkshire) a small wood-stove are the basic essentials. Your requirements will vary, but this is where your soul will restore itself -- so don´t skimp.

Thanks for asking @jowwy . I've had a busy couple of months (with work) which is why I've not updated in a while. Just managed to do enough gardening to keep things under control and push on with the workshop on free weekends. The project has been an exhausting single-handed mission, but wonderful learning experience. The rubber roof is on (needs finishing off), I have set of secondhand french doors ready to fit and will be cutting an opening for a side window too. Hope to have those things done over the next two weeks, then onwards to cladding and digging a 30+ metre trench, ready for the electrics.

 

It looks like your doing a pretty good job indeed. I love seeing peoples projects as much as i like doing my own.

 

Thanks chaps. It's over engineered for a garden workshop, but will hopefully fair better than the previous shed. Looking forward to finishing so it can be put to good use. All gardening, DIY tools and bicycles are taking up space our conservatory and the garage is full of materials. Promised my wife it would all be done by now…

 

Little shed / workshop update… Working on and off over the weekends, it has taken almost a year to get this built, but I'm finally on the home straight. The workshop has been clad in dark grey metal sheets to be relatively maintenance free and hide into the background of the garden. I just have some trims to fix around the edges and windows to go, then onto building an area of composite decking out the front. Oh and then build a workbench etc to use inside. Fingers crossed I'll get that all done before summer…





If you look closesly, it's hidden just behind the pergola and Wisteria…
