I have read some of the New Year's Honours List.

Why can't they just give it to those who really deserve it. It seems that if you are
a bungling bureaucrat, son/daughter of some famous, you could get one.

I see the woman who was behind the failures in the immigration service, and
the shambolic UK tax office, is getting one. Why?

Give them to the real people who deserve them.

Probably stirred a hornets nest, but thing like thing get my goat.

I do like the honours list . It is a good way to give people a pat on the back . As others though the selection protest is corrupt and really should be stopped . Civil servants get them for just doing (or not doing) their jobs. Fat cats who donate to the party get them ...it goes on and on. They really do need an independent selection committee , who will actually listen to the nation.

Handing out honours to the 'wrong' people just degrades them. They should only go to people who have selflessly contributed to society. So film stars yes - but in recognition of their charity work for example - not because of the job they do.

I don't take much interest now a days - they seem to be handed out 'willy nilly'.

My late Grandfather gave his gong back when The Beatles got theirs...grumpy old s.d! Agree with many of the sentiments already expressed altho I am delighted that Tony McCoy got a huge pat on the back. You'd be hard pressed to find any sportsman who has been at the very top of his sport every year for 20 years and managed to break just about every bone in his body doing so.It was only after having won The National that he began to consider he wasn't bad at what he did. He'd been champion jockey for 15 years by then! Just wish some of our other sportsmen didn't think they were the cat's pyjamas when in reality they aren't world class.

The row over the honours system being used to reward Conservative Party ‘cronies’ is set to be reignited with the revelation that almost 30 Tory Party members or supporters have received awards.

Publication of the New Year’s Honours List confirms that the Australian political strategist, Lynton Crosby, is to be knighted for services to politics. It follows his short stint working for the Conservative Party earlier this year - for which he was paid £500,000 – during which he successfully directed their General Election strategy, resulting in an unexpected overall majority for David Cameron.;)

I'd draw the line at honours for sports people, entertainers, civil servants etc.

Honours should be for people who have done exceptional things for their country, not just done their job and got very well paid in the process.

In my book, if you become a millionaire by doing something, you dont need an honour to go with it.
As for charity work, most celebs. get paid for that.

Being such a class based country, as we are, honours will always come down to who you know and how well connected you are.

They will of course always let a few of the plebs in just to make it look right.

There is a family I know. They do not judge. They welcome everyone and and anyone. They try to squeeze the best out of everybody. They always achieve it. They always turn people into the best they can be and then push them to be more, and people usually achieve it under their guidance. They will receive no recognition, nor do they seek it. Yet they keep doing what they do. They have transformed my life for the better, and that of my son and my wife, yet they will receive no honour except the respect and recognition of those they meet.

Perhaps this is enough for them.

Also agree but all the political parties are as bad as each other.

                        Definitely.
