Last night we came across this moth in our hallway. May have come in through open upstairs window. We had a good look at him took a photo captured him in a fairly large coleslaw carton with place mat gently sliding underneath and let him go in the garden 10 pm. I can't remember seeing one like this before. Quite large over 2 inches.

How come you all refer to it as a she? I presume there are male moths, or does something sinister happen to them all before we get chance to see them?

Before I decide whether it a nice moth or not, I need to know what the caterpillars eat.

Old lady Moth it is. Nice to know if I see one again. I expect the male and female are the same. We have quite a bit of blackthorn, reading Zigs link, around here so the habitat is here. Nature, I will never stop learning.

Mention Caterpillars and I usually react quite positively a bit of squishing springs to mind. Anything other than the cabbage white is often given a chance just to see what happens especially if there is just one or two of them.
