Have you thought of growing from seed early next year?

No. Compost is too expensive and too c**p here to want to sow any more than strictly necessary! + so much other stuff to do in Spring. Call me unadventurous, but I've always done onions from sets..it's so easy and reliable. Let's hope that it's just a one-off blip this year :)

          Hi @noisette47

          IMG_1130.JPG

          IMG_1133.JPG

We saw these this afternoon and seem to remember they were varieties you said you were after.

They were literally the last few bags in their baskets, so not the biggest sets, though still looking healthy.

They are 500gm bags and you are welcome to both or whichever you want, if not we will be happy to keep them, partic the Radar which we can plant now.

The possible downside is that looking on Royal Mails site is about £6.55 for 500gm to France or £9 for 1kg which is way more than the cost of the sets .. unless you know of a cheaper carrier ?

Not sure how many you want, but also happy to split them both in half and make up a just under 500gm parcel.

Another way would be to send them for just £3 ( up to 2kg 2nd class) to @Fat Controller where he could bundle them with his ... if he's happy with doing that ?

Your choice, either way no problem, we have a bed ready for them if not :)

Hello , that is so kind of you! As you can use some too, I won't be greedy and say 'send the lot' If you don't mind splitting them, I could use half of each. I've PMd you my details. Thank you very much :)

Alternatively, if you want, send them on to me and I will put them all in the one package? I am expecting the ones from the garden centre to be delivered today or tomorrow.

              Hi @noisette47 ,

You are very welcome to all of them if you want, we did have other things planned for that bed anyway.

Would make sense /cheaper to send them down to @Fat Controller and all of them in one parcel over to you.

Just let us know if you want half of each , or just one full pack , or both full packs, and we will pack them off; whatever, you are not being greedy

Just to let you both know that the sets arrived today (in impeccable condition) Many, many thanks @Fat Controller and @ricky101 .
I suspect that they'll be even more welcome after 10 solid days of rain.
              The Hercules must have dissolved!
              xx

                Hi,

We saw some more Autumn Champion in another local garden center so got them and planted them up last week in that new bed.

Have grown spring planted sets for many years, yet never tried any autumn ones ?!

Never too old to learn :)

                Hope yours do well ..

I'll keep my fingers crossed for us both, ricky101, that we have a gentle winter!:) I owe you big-time, so if ever there's anything I can share with you, just say the word!

Great news! I did think they would be arriving around today. Best of luck with them, and thanks again for the onion soup recipes (which I must share with @ricky101 at some point too, especially as he is growing them too now!)

As for you, young man!! Cheque will be in the post for the postage etc., not to mention all the chasing about you've done. I can conduct my very own RHS onion trials now :roflol: (if it ever stops raining).

Absolutely no need - as I said, it was a gift from Ricky and I - even the postage was split between us. Besides, when you find that particularly excellent version of garlic that is bound to be lurking somewhere around in France, you know we will be wanting some.....

                    Hi,

As mentioned last November got some more Autumn Champion sets and have just harvested them the other day.
Despite the strange winter and spring weather they have produced the biggest and best onions we have ever grown ! only two bolting but still usable. :dbgrtmb:

The flavour as stated is milder , but will grow more of them and try some of the other varieties as well next autumn.

Hope all yours were as good @noisette47 ?
