Scientists have figured out that plants actually do basic arithmetic in order to survive through the night when they can't photosynthesise.

The more I learn about plants, there more amazed I am. Just the other we were told of proof of quantum physics being utilised by plants to achieve 90% energy conversion efficiency.

And also recently we learned that plants use fungi as telephone lines for inter-plant communication.

Next we'll be finding out that plants have evolved a clever trapping mechanism to feed themselves, not with insects, but with animals as large as, say, sheep. Oh wait...

As gardeners, we might think that we make the plants work for us. We choose the plants to suit our tastes and needs. Is that entirely so? Is it not we that serve them? They're cunning things I reckon. Need to keep an eye on them. They'll take over given half a chance.

I know that it's definitely us that serves them - they have us running around watering and feeding them on a daily basis, moving them into new homes when their current home gets too small, and don't even get me started on the ones that manage to force us into buying them and transporting them home....
