That's a whole lot better, good work FC. Would the composters tuck away on the left side by the conifer? It seems a shame to waste the sunny area where they stand now. A new washing line too I think. Any thoughts on plants yet?

Thanks @Sheal :) The composters are going to go on top of some slabs under the confers on the right - nothing will grow there anyway as those thieves steal all the moisture and nutrients (not even grass survives).

Plants wise, the current plan is for tatties, beetroot, peas and maybe sweetcorn to begin with but that is yet to be fully decided. Food initially, although the hibiscus against the fence will stay and if we find it too much to keep then we will either plant shrubs or we can grass over it.

Veg's are a good idea. I'm not a veg grower apart from runner beans. Will you be able to get some under way now, or will you have to wait until next year?

I will wait until next year - it is 2.6 metres from the fence to the inside of the wood for the raised bed and that is the full width of the garden that you see there, so there will be quite a lot of compost/soil to go in there first. I will need to wait and see how much of that comes out of baskets and tubs coming to an end this autumn and then I can decide how much infill I need. My thinking was that peas and tatties might be quite good for getting the soil going a bit, but I am open to suggestions.

You mentioned beetroot.. I've always found them an easy veg to grow. 'Boltardy' are well worth the small space that they take up. And if you could squeeze a wigwam of runner beans in, then you'll get high rewards from a metre ish sized patch :blue thumb:

I know they used to say start off with potatoes because you cultivate the soil by earthing them up. My dad used to just potatoes and cabbages and always in the same place and never had any problems with that, the only thing was trying to store the potatoes because there was so many.

I'll need advice on variety of potatoes too - the ones we grew in the barrel a few years ago weren't very good, and just exploded no matter how you cooked them.

Therein lies the problem.... I can't remember

In my defence, a good few years have passed with quite a lot of sleeps, a coma and two brain hemorrhages thrown in....

As I am starting again, I'll be able to choose whatever is deemed the best

I will try 'international kidney' (aka J Royals) next spring for early potatoes. When harvested i can use the space to put other veg in.

                          Great progress FC, well done!

I recommend Winston as a first early, they don't break up when boiled and are the earliest variety I have found. They have been trouble free for me.
