    Does it actually taste of anything?
    Or is it just a chef "thing" costs the earth and "adds wonderful colour".

      I have used it, and still do not see the hype in it.

      Use it quite a lot in cooking and it varies quite a lot in taste. Seems to stale quite quickly, so cannot be kept in the back of the cupboard with the rest of the dried herbs from 1976!

        I agree that it can get stale/lose some of its flavour but it is still good for colouring. It gives a better colour than turmeric but turmeric has medicinal properties as well.

          Saffron was grown extensively in Saffron Walden just up the road from where I used to live, Last century I think.

              My take is that if you're making a dessert with it it needs to be better than if you're cooking savoury.

              Yes. I would call it pleasantly musty (?). Make your own mind up - try saffron spuds.
