Not sure Snorky :).....ceanothus are fast growing shrubs that resent too much pruning and to maintain those lollipop shapes will need pruning. They often suffer dieback after pruning. To maintain that lollipop shape, as with other “topiary” they will need trimming during summer thus removing flowering wood. My feeling is that they are best grown as natural shrubs.

I can see the appeal....more hype than reality I think

Maybe others have successfully grown ceanothus as lollipops.......I would be interested to know; perhaps post a picture!:)

@wiseowl I agree with Verdun but it will need a bit of protection if there's extremely low temperatures for a few days. It's normally H3 - H4 so should be OK in your garden in normal circumstances as it's fairly well protected :blue thumb:.

I call them the "diva" of the border but put the time in and they will repay you .... I am going to give it a go at showing them this year .... Guy Langdon will be flowering for the first time this year , just taken cuttings just in case ...and thining the crowns down to 4 or 5 shoots to get quality not quantity

                Thank you

Very interesting Spruce.....let us know how you get on at the Shows. Also how thinning the shoots improves quality:)

Ah you are right about the ceanothus @Verdun. I completely forgot about pruning and how they cope with that. I might just buy a shrub type to replace the beauty I had to get rid of. I absolutely loved all the bees it attracted-100s of em!

Well that’s £30 saved for something else :)

This afternoon I passed by B&M and picked up 3 aubrieta for £5. They are sorry looking specimens so I am hoping a repot and a bit of tlc will help bring them on. There are one or two flowers on them so they should be fine. By the time I plant them out they should be significantly bigger and stronger.

I took a picture of it fully assembled but for some reason I was not able to upload it.

I bought it today from QD for £7.99. Of all the shops that listed it, this was the cheapest. Once its built its actual pretty solid. I guess only time will tell.

We were given a free swing from a friend. It looks like that bit of space is now destined to be a kiddie corner. I will have to rethink my whole design.
