Showy natives

Large drifts of ragwort are much easier for the cinnabar moths to find than solitary plants, since the chemicals it emits will be higher in concentration in the air.
Its not just moths with native plants, but specialised fungi, tiny beetles and bugs will colonise them. Spores are everywhere, many rust fungi for example only attack one or two plants.
Thats what they found at Knepp, they had masses of ragwort (to the dismay of their neighbours) but in the following years they had attracted so many cinnabar moths, and so many seed eating birds taking the seed, that it reduced considerably.

 

I only kept the ragwort because it had self seeded from somewhere, wasn't doing me any harm so thought why not leave it.

I always think to do really good for wildlife you need to plant things on mass, one here and there might help somethings but you need more to do more.
