    Hi all

Those that have seen my garden project will know that I have a small garden that I am working on.

I’d like to compost my own waste but don’t have copious amounts of space.

Can anyone recommend something for a small garden? My only criteria would be that it can fit in a small garden, isn’t an eye sore so preferably something with an wooden aesthetic and does a good job.

My local council offers the Dalak type compost bin. I have one that works well and looks ok.

      Hi,

The plastic compost tubs have a very big footprint and can look quiet an eyesore.

We built some simple ones from 100mm x 18mm treated timber laths about 600x600mm square and 1200mm high and used a Bay bush to camouflage it.
We had two together so it made 'turning over' the heaps so much easier.

An alternative method, depending on the amount of soil space you have, is to dig a progressive series of deep holes or trenches in your beds and place all your 'pure' green waste into the trench and then fill back in.
Its a centuries old way, some still use today for particulalry hungry plants like runner beans, but sure it will benefit all plant and soils.
Seems a much better way the let the soil do all the work than messing with compost bins, its what we do now, store the waste in a small tub until it gets full, then bury it.

Well, this is that last open Compost Heap I had, after having several of them in different places in the garden. It had quite a big footpring as it was 6' x 8' and, sometimes, up to 8' high.

But I decided to tidy up the Patio area in late 2018 and after having the Patio pavered laid I put in new Compost Bins which actually, to me, look better and also take up less room.

The new Compost Bins where the old Compost Heap used to be. They take up a much small foot print.
