Hi Snorky, i read somewhere that stones and pebbles help to keep the pond clean, ive put a few in my little pond after reading this, to say its still in its first year its quite clear/clean,

I did have a fair bit of algae about a month ago but as its getting warmer its getting cleaner and clearer,

I will see if i can find the link it was a interesting read on natural ways on keeping your pond clear.

@Snorky85 I do have two ponds as the Belfast sink pond was completed Nov last year :). I have gravel and rocks in both sink and bath ponds, although I don't know yet if they are ' working ' so to speak.

Only almost a year later and I thought I'd update this thread. Main part of the back garden project is complete (excluding planting).

Last picture was the garden this morning. I'm still undecided as to what to plant in it...want some plant height adding to the raised beds as I'm trying to enclose that off almost as a separate room....good sunbathing spot I think too ha ha.

The left side of the garden (you can see from second to bottom photo) is going to be redone too. It's got that wooden edging that is rotting away and needs replacing and we are getting rid of the little pond now I've finished my new"nature" pond. Was really pleased with my new pond...within hours of finishing it, that night I had a frog already making itself at home in it! I love it.

We'll also be getting rid of that rockery/waterfall into the koi pond as it just chucks awful muck and algae into the koi which they could do with out.

I've just planted up a small box hedging border on the right hand side. Planning on replacing that big ball conifer on the left. It was looking really nice but has got way out of hand...it is supported by two other big wooden supports as it's bent over. Time for something new and maybe a yew topiary design...who knows how much that one in my fav chelsea garden cost but maybe something I can aspire to...hmm!

My fav chelsea garden...I need to get some more structure in the garden...definitely some more evergreens as over winter it looks quite sad.

                              The garden structure looks great.

I wouldn't know where to start with planting for all round colour as I'm hopeless with formal mixed with cottage style which appears to be the look that you are favouring.

The plants that pop in the winter sun in our garden are those with glaucous leaves. Things like yucca thompsoniana, yucca rostrata and daisylyrion wheeleri. I'm not suggesting that you go in this direction but the colour really stands out.

                                Snorky...excellent work :)
                                Plants???
Give us an idea of the soil, drainage, aspect and exposure; and what sort of planting you like?
For me, go for quality every time for every spot.....better than just filling in I think.
The grass edging could be softened and lifted with planting too.....shame you feel lavendar isnt suitable cos it would look sensational there! .....if sunny grit can be dug in to accommodate them??? Grasses for "movement"???
