Dig in rotted manure; it will help open up the clay, add nutrients and retain moisture

Or if digging in is not an option (perhaps because you already have established plants in), then provided the clay is loose enough to drain well, I'd just add the rotted manure to the surface in between the plants, and let the earthworms drag it under. That will help it to retain moisture as well, as it will keep the sun off the clay.

Leaf mould: Collect leaves in autumn, stack them seperate from your other compost, water them, leave for 2 years...add to your clay soil as a mulch. You can also top your soil with grass clippings or compost.

    Steve...:)

On the off chance that you're based near Guildford or Woking, I get mine from the Compost Centre with free delivery and cheap prices. Most stables will have a supply for free but you usually have to pick it up yourself which an issue at 78:(
