I have never grown Chionodoxa but the Sarah Raven site says planting is OK Sept - Nov
    Chionodoxa forbesii 'Blue'
Pretty little things aren't they , think I'll buy some and use instead of Crocus in my planters.
In my gardening calendar I normally finish clearing the flower beds and plant Daffs and Tulips after Nov the 5th , Bonfire night ! I get everything planted by the end of November.
Off to Ebay now to find some , Glory of the Snow , great name :blue thumb:

@"M" We have joined up to Freecycle. My wife likes to scan through the classifieds anyway so she will keep an eye on it.

We found a pot for sale locally today advertised as big. When we enquired about its size we were told

      "Its big"

That's very helpful. Sometimes you wonder if these people are serious about selling things.

In lieu of finding a suitable pot I have a contingency plan. I already have a reasonably big pot with an Acuba in it. The plant although healthy, never really took off.

At some point I want an evergreen shrub to bridge the gap between the greenhouse and the fence. It wouldn't be my first choice but why not facilitate what I already have. Seems like a no brainer really.

I already have an Acuba elsewhere in the garden that's doing very well.

      Just a thought.

Planted some chionodoxa last year in the back border, they got a bit lost as they're quite small but when you do find them they're are a lovely little surprise

Gary I found 12 inch pots are a decent size for layering bulbs, 14 or 16 does give a better effect I think though as you can get more bulbs in and the pots are a little bit taller.

waiting for my shipment of bulbs still, will call them Monday to see where they are. but as long as the ground can be worked, no issue. I would even plant them in December.

@Linz Do you have any photos? It would be helpful to see how the finished display should look.

Instead of dragging on this thread, I will do my research and start a new thread in a more appropriate place.

mine are planted in the front lawn area. I am aiming for a nice huge size mat of them. as they self seed nice, they are getting there. and they bloom before the lawn needs cutting.

I'll have a look through I'm sure I did take one. Rather than plant en masse I dotted them around everywhere hoping they'll multiply and I won't have to bother lifting/dividing for a good few years .. I'm a lazy so and so

I wonder if they self seed freely here, they've only had a year in the ground so far though so we'll see. I spread quite a bit of anemone blanda seeds about so I got my fingers crossed for them to turn out like yours ;) (dreams eh!)

I have never bothered to lift and separate mine. as when they bloom, they do not seem to be tight. But it does take time for a good mat to form, like several years. You can memorize where they are and every fall add another 100 or so to the area. as they are not a big bulb, just a quick turn of the soil, like depth of your finger knuckle is ok for them.

Thank you for all the great replies - well I've been digging my heavy concrete-like clay today and mixing in gravel and compost. Bulbs now in - will let you know how they get on!
