I bought a large bag of compost to pot plants from, all is well except the compst is very clumpy and it just feels to me that it needs thinning out a little to get rid of a lot of those clumps. Even with my hands I am finding this isnt always succesful. What ways are there to thin out/break down the clumps?

Some brands are worse than others. I have some Wickes MPC which is particularly lumpy clumpy. I use my hands, I have tried tipping into a bucket and using a trowel with little effect.

I don't think I can remember ever buying any bags of MPC that didn't need breaking up before I could use it. We have the Aldi version this year and that was no different, but once broke up it was easy to handle and stuff is doing well in it.
